COUNTRY HOUSE, KATO CHORIO

PROPOSAL FOR THE COMPLETION OF AN SEMI-FINISHED HOUSE IN KATO CHORIO, PLOMARI - LESVOS

Ten minutes away from Plomari on the outskirts of Kato Chorio, there is a semi-finished house in a wonderful olive grove. A narrow road connects the house with the village. Its elevated position offers one of the most wonderful views of Plomari, the port and the sea. The house is located at the top of the space. The location and layout of the house follow the topography of the plot, according to the urban planning regulations that govern the area. The two-storey holiday house is surrounded by impressive cliffs and olive trees. The house has been designed in a way that brings natural light to the living spaces. The openings have been designed along the east and south sides, to ensure the best view of the Aegean Sea. The main space, the living room and the kitchen, is located on the ground floor. Its sliding doors give a continuous space with a covered terrace of 32 square meters. Only one bedroom and bathroom are on the same level. A staircase leads to the other bedrooms and another bathroom to the first floor. The house is accessed from the west side, by a footbridge. The footbridge is covered with wooden planks and leads to the last level. The basement is lined with stone, in contrast to the white coated top level. The built-in pergola on the ground floor from the east side, and the semi-outdoor space on the first floor from the south side, protect the house from the sun. Wooden blinds are also placed vertically outside the bedrooms. The opening with a view to the sea – from the east and south side, and the opacity of the side and rear facades, was designed using passive building principles. This ensures that the interior space is comfortable even in the extreme conditions of summer and winter. The olive trees are planted on berms of dry stones, a characteristic feature of the landscape of the island. The pool is on the south side providing plenty space for fun. A pergola and a sunbathing area that have been designed are located by the pool.
